Discmania Astronaut Review | Distance Driver

The Discmania Astronaut is a faster speed driver that allows beginners to get more distance.

With a 6 rated glide, the Astronaut will be a popular option for new players to get more distance.

Let’s take a closer look at the Discmania Astronaut and why it’s becoming a popular distance driver for players of all skill levels.

Discmania Astronaut Distance Driver

The Astronaut stays in the air, and that’s a good thing.

It gives you the ability to shape shots and have a high speed turnover disc in your bag.

The Astronaut is only available in the Active Line plastic right now.

Long Distance Turnover Shots

Someone that’s intermediate to advanced in skill level will make this type of shot work consistently (remember it is a 12 speed).

The Astronaut with it’s 6 rated glide will give you enough flight to enjoy a long turnover shot.

This shot will be useful for anyone who’s been playing disc golf for at least a year or has developed a good form and can turn the Astronaut over.

Here’s how to check.

Have you accidentally turned the Astronaut into a roller?

You have?! Good.

You are ready to turn down the power or add a hyzer angle to your release to make this shot work.

Test, test test.

This disc will not fair extremely well in big wind gusts though, so be careful with when you take this shot.

Tailwinds are your best friend forever and ever with this disc.

Beginner Distance Driver

As a player still learning their form, the Astronaut can be your first step into a true ‘distance driver’.

With a -4 turn, it is one of the most out of the box understable high speed drivers manufactured by any disc company on the market today.

If you are new to disc golf and are still having trouble throwing the astronaut straight, you should look for a similar flight path in a lower speed.

If you’re sticking with the Discmania brand, the Genius is the fairway driver you should check out.

Hyzer Flip Control

If you are able to turn over the Astronaut, then the long turnover shot isn’t the only shot type you have available with the Astronaut.

If you have been practicing your hyzer flip, you can also counter balance the understability (flippy-ness) of the astronaut off the rip with a hyzer angled release.

I will add in here that if you have the arm speed and form, you would also be able to use the Astronaut as a long range hyzer flip turnover disc as well.

Similar Discs to the Astronaut

There are a couple discs that have similar traits to the Astronaut.

Here’s a short list (but not a full one):

These three discs I’ve selected are very similar in flight path to the Astronaut including their speed, turn or glide.

Each one will offer something slightly different.

Review Methodology & Why You Should Trust Us

There are a lot of different disc golf discs on the market, and it can be a real challenge to understand all the nuances about the differences between them.

Disc Golfer Rich Priebe (#69849) has been playing for over 10 years and has spent hundreds of hours researching, testing and reviewing hundreds of different disc golf discs and talking to experts in the field like Ben Calhoun of The Throw Shop

As the writer on every article on this site (Rich), I only recommend discs and other products that I believe in and that I think will deliver value for your time, skill, and money.

My goal is to help you find the perfect disc that fits your skill and fills that hole in your bag, so that you can enjoy your rounds of disc while getting better at the game.

The Astronaut by Discmania is a new players friend, and is a very good disc to choose as your first true distance driver.

Play the tailwinds, learn to hyzer flip and practice your rollers with this disc.

It has a lot of utility for players of all skill levels.
