By now you’ve probably heard about ChatGPT. It’s been all over the internet for the past few weeks.
It’s an AI language model trained on general knowledge from a ton of data from around the internet. The entirety of the English speaking Wikipedia makes up just 0.6% of it’s training data.
Just be aware, ChatGPT does have a limitation on real time or newer information. The language model was trained on data from 2021, so it doesn’t have any information newer than that.
I decided to fire up a conversation with Chat GPT to talk about disc golf.
I purposely tried speaking casually, and curiously. Here’s the conversation:
Me: yo chatgpt lets talk about disc golf
ChatGPT: Sure, I’d be happy to talk about disc golf! What specifically would you like to know?
Me: who is considered the goat in disc golf?
ChatGPT: It’s difficult to say who is considered the “GOAT” (Greatest of All Time) in disc golf, as opinions on this topic may vary. However, some players who are often mentioned as among the greatest in the sport include Ken Climo, Avery Jenkins, and Paul McBeth. These players have all had successful careers in disc golf and have won multiple major tournaments.
Me: i don’t know if you’ve heard of him, but this newer player Gannon Buhr is reallllllly good
Chat GPT: I’m sorry, but I don’t have any information on specific players or events that have occurred after my knowledge cutoff. I’m a language model, so I don’t have the ability to browse the web or access information about current events. However, it’s great to hear that there are talented players in the disc golf community!
(At this point I get a bit nerdy)
Me: dang that’s unfortunate. sorry to switch topics, but do you know when you might have the ability for real time information access?
ChatGPT: I’m sorry, but as an artificial intelligence language model, I don’t have the ability to browse the web or access information about current events. My knowledge is based on the data that was used to train me, which includes a wide range of general knowledge and information from the internet, books, and other sources. However, I don’t have the ability to update my knowledge or access new information after my training was completed. I’m here to help answer questions to the best of my ability based on the knowledge I have been trained on. Is there anything else I can help with?
Me: Ok let me ask it another way. Do you know what the current experts in the AI field expect GPT based technology to be able to update their knowledge bases in real time?
ChatGPT: It’s possible that in the future, language models like me may be able to update their knowledge bases in real time. However, this is an active area of research and it is not currently possible for language models like me to do this.
Currently, the most advanced language models are trained on very large datasets, often consisting of billions of words, and are able to generate human-like text. These models can be fine-tuned for specific tasks, such as translation or answering questions, by training them on additional data for those tasks. However, these models do not have the ability to update their knowledge bases or access new information after they have been trained.
It’s worth noting that language models are just one type of artificial intelligence, and there are many other areas of AI research that are also actively being developed. There are many exciting developments happening in the field of AI, and it will be interesting to see how the technology continues to evolve in the future.
Me: ok cool. so do you wanna go disc golf?
ChatGPT: I’m sorry, but as an artificial intelligence, I don’t have the ability to physically go anywhere or participate in activities. I exist only in a virtual sense and am here to provide information and assistance to the best of my ability. Is there anything else I can help with?
Me: I wish you could go disc golf with me
Speaking of data, have you heard of the Disc Golf Data book?
ChatGPT: I’m sorry that I’m unable to physically go disc golfing with you. However, I can certainly provide information about the sport and answer any questions you might have. Do you have any specific questions about disc golf that I can help with?
Me: so wait! you just called disc golf a sport… some people don’t really think disc golf is a ‘sport’. what say you?
ChatGPT: In my opinion, disc golf can be considered a sport. It involves physical activity, skill, and competition, which are common characteristics of sports.
Disc golf involves throwing a disc, or frisbee, towards a target, with the goal of completing each hole in the fewest throws possible. Like many other sports, disc golf requires a certain level of physical fitness, as well as hand-eye coordination and throwing accuracy. It also involves strategy and decision-making, as players must choose which type of disc to throw and plan their shots accordingly.
Disc golf can be played recreationally or competitively, and there are professional disc golf tournaments with cash prizes. Many people consider it a legitimate sport, and it is even included in the World Games, which is an international multi-sport event featuring sports that are not currently part of the Olympic Games.
Me: that’s true ya. so wait, you have an opinion?
ChatGPT: As an artificial intelligence, I don’t have personal opinions or feelings in the same way that humans do. However, I am able to provide information and perspective on various topics based on my training and the data that was used to create me. I can present different viewpoints and perspectives on a topic, but I don’t have personal preferences or biases. Is there anything else I can help with?
Me: ya you just used the phrase ‘in my opinion’. is that just a common phrasing you’ve been trained to use, or do you personally have an ‘opinion’?
ChatGPT: As an artificial intelligence, I don’t have personal opinions or feelings in the same way that humans do. However, I am programmed to use language and phrasing that is similar to how humans communicate. The phrase “in my opinion” is a common way for people to express their perspective or viewpoint on a topic, and I use it as a way to indicate that the information I am providing is based on my knowledge and understanding of the topic, rather than being a definitive statement of fact. Is there anything else I can help with?
Me: Well in my opinion, Paul McBeth is the GOAT.
- ChatGPT doesn’t know who Gannon Buhr is
- ChatGPT says disc golf is a sport
- ChatGPT refuses to call Paul the GOAT
- ChatGPT cannot go disc golfing with me (yet)
While I think tools like this are extremely useful, it still has a long way to go.
Nonetheless, just interacting with ChatGPT is a pretty cool experience.
